Qualifications and experience
Born in Seefeld (Upper Bavaria), Ursula Schlegel completed her studies and legal traineeship in Bavaria. She qualified as an English Solicitor in 1998 during several years of working as a lawyer in the City of London by passing the QLTT exam. Prior to founding her own firm in 2014, she worked for major international law firms, for the German law firms Wellensiek and Kebekus et Zimmermann, which specialize in restructuring and insolvency, and for KPMG.

Ursula Schlegel's practice focuses on restructuring and insolvency. She has been involved in a large number of national and cross-border restructuring and insolvency proceedings of all sizes, including some of the largest and highly publicised proceedings of the past 20 years. Ursula’s experience with restructuring and insolvency practice benefits from both the perspective gained from advisory work as well as from managing insolvency proceedings as part of the office holder’s team.

Expert adviser to the German legislator in the run-up to the 2012 and 2021 German insolvency and restructuring law reforms from 2007, during the run-up to the insolvency law reform that came into force in 2012 (“ESUG”) and the introduction of a German group insolvency law, Ursula Schlegel was an independent expert in the expert panels at the German Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection (BMJV, responsible for the drafting of new laws at Government level). From 2015, in the run-up to the most recent reform “StaRUG” that came into force on 1 January 2021, implementing the EU Directive on Insolvency and Restructuring, Ursula participated in the BMJV's expert panels on the EU legislative process, on the ESUG evaluation and on the subsequent implementation of both into German law.

Ursula Schlegel is the editor of the global collection of 53 reports on domestic insolvency and restructuring law and practice in Münchener Kommentar InsO, a leading German Commentary on Insolvency and Restructuring Law (publishers: C.H. Beck Verlag), which was most recently published in its 4th edition in March 2021.
